Caroling, Caroling Through the Town...

Christmas bells are ringing...Caroling, caroling up and down. Christmas bells are ringing.

We didn't sing that tune, but we sang a lot of others to our friends and acquaintances in the neighborhood. We went with Millers since this was their neighborhood too a few years ago. Mr. Miller said he likes his new house better, but likes the neighbors in his old neighborhood better. We agree.

Christopher led the singing, picking songs and starting pitches. He did a great job. Matthew was the cookie man passing out the goodie plates since Leah was a chicken!

Listener reactions ranged from shock to tears to singing along with us and asking for more. We had people come and listen in pjs and robes, shorts and t-shirts, barefooted or just coming home from work. We made 12 stops unless it was 13 and spent an hour and a half traveling about a mile! The caroling method that worked best was the first and second verse of a well known Christmas tune then ending with 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas,' but we played it by ear. Some folks wanted more and others looked embarrassed.   If the singing didn't go over too well, we'd quit after one verse, hand them the cookie plate and with a 'Merry Christmas' or two, hit the road! There weren't too many of those.

The evening was beautiful...not too cold or windy. It couldn't have been better, except maybe some snow on the ground to make it seem a bit more like Christmas. I know we spread some Christmas cheer, but more importantly, I hope we spread the love of Christ.

When we arrived home, we put Leah's breakfast/dinner on to cook. Rod made waffles, Christopher scrambled eggs and everyone ate with gusto.  Singing (or shivering) in the cold works up an appetite. The young folks discussed names and their meanings during dinner. Matthew pronounced the childrens' names in Hebrew and told them what they meant. Interesting...

Mr. and Mrs. left after dinner with an interesting snafu in transportation that left all the young people in Matthew's vehicle. That was supposed to mean that Matthew got them home at a reasonable hour! Christopher had two finals the next day, and Jubilee was going with us to sing at the nursing homes, but the clock in the living room was down for the Christmas season, so he had no idea what time it was.

We played a very hilarious game of Signal after Matthew and Aaron got ping pong out of their system. Daniel had the idea to make the signals more 'flamboyant' to keep the game moving. We made the signals flamboyant...mine was downright embarassing. Aaron really needed to get to bed since he has to work early so at 11, he reminded M3 of the time.  Ooops!  So much for the reasonable hour!  We didn't mind. They caroled their way out the door and down the driveway, waving till the end.

Caroling with Millers made the top ten events for the year 2011.  Thanks for coming with us.
